Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a fully framed shower screen and a semi-frameless shower screen?

The primary difference between a fully framed shower screen and a semi-frameless shower screen lies in the amount and placement of metal framing. Here are the distinctions in detail:

Fully Framed Shower Screen:

  1. Complete Framing: Every edge of the glass panels is surrounded by metal (aluminium) framing. This includes the top, bottom, and sides of each panel, as well as the door.
  2. Support and Stability: The extensive framing provides maximum structural support and stability, making it a durable option.
  3. Glass: Typically, 6.38mm laminated glass is used but because the framing offers significant support, thinner glass (4-5mm) can be used safely. All glass is in accordance with AS1288
  4. Traditional Look: Fully framed screens often have a more traditional or utilitarian appearance due to the visible metal around all edges.
  5. Cost-Effective: These screens are generally more affordable than semi-frameless and frameless options because they use less expensive materials.

Semi-Frameless Shower Screen:

  1. Minimal Framing: Metal (aluminium) framing is used selectively, often around the perimeter of the entire enclosure and sometimes on the door, but not around every edge of each glass panel.
  2. Moderate Support: While providing a balance between support and aesthetics, the reduced framing still offers good stability, especially around the door and critical joints.
  3. Glass: To ensure safety and durability with less framing, tempered glass (6mm) is used. All glass is in accordance with AS1288
  4. Modern Look: The minimalistic framing provides a cleaner, more contemporary look compared to fully framed screens.
  5. Higher Cost: Semi-frameless screens are typically more expensive than fully framed ones due to the sophisticated design, but they are usually less expensive than fully frameless screens.

Choosing between the two depends on factors like budget, desired aesthetics, and the level of structural support needed.

What glass is used in shower screens?

Shower screens typically use toughened glass due to its strength, safety features, and durability. Depending on the design and privacy requirements, options like laminated glass, obscure glass, or acid etched glass may also be used.

What is laminated glass?

Laminated glass is made by bonding two or more layers of glass with an interlayer, usually of PVB (polyvinyl butyral). This type of glass is known for its safety and strength. In the event of breakage, the interlayer holds the shards together, making it ideal for applications requiring enhanced security and durability

What is toughened glass?

Toughened glass, also known as tempered glass, is heat-treated to increase its strength compared to normal glass. It is designed to break into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards, reducing the risk of injury. Toughened glass is a popular choice for shower screens due to its safety and durability.

What is obscure glass?

Obscure glass is designed to provide privacy while still allowing light to pass through. It has a textured or frosted appearance that blurs visibility, making it suitable for shower screens where privacy is a priority.

What is acid etched glass?

Acid etched glass has a smooth, frosted finish created by treating the glass surface with acid. This process diffuses light and reduces glare while maintaining privacy, making it a stylish and practical option for shower screens.
